I had the great fortune to be raised in an artist's studio--literally. My mother is a professional artist, and I was constantly getting into her art supplies when I was a kid. I began making jewelry when I was nine, thin strips of colorful paper Mod Podged into homemade beads.
Enameling entered the picture years later, when I took a class at the local art museum taught by Harriet Nearing, who had learned the craft in Japan. I was immediately hooked on the never-ending creative possibilities of glass on metal, and continue to find inspiration everywhere. My wide range of interests, from botany and medical history to astronomy and art history, have found their way into my work.
People often ask me how I generate my ideas for my work; I think I gain a lot of inspiration from natural forms, daydreams, and my love for design. The wall of my studio is covered with images of tattoos, fashion, modern art, etchings, and an alien-themed B-movie poster from the 1950s.
I live in Pittsburgh, PA, with a lovely husband, tons of art supplies, and an itty-bitty garden.
